How to become an agent?

My sister and her friends want to become models. I believe in them and want to help them get started in the business. I have no work experience in the field, but believe that with the knowledge that I have acquired in my previous jobs and also in school I can help them get started. I’m finishing a PR certificate soon and believe in my networking ability. So my question is can i just become their agent ? What are the things I need to do first. I don’t want to do anything illegal. What are your suggestions. I’m not really doing this for the money. I just want to get started somewhere and see where it could take me. when applying for jobs they often toss my resume for lack of experience and I always wonder where am I going to get that experience if no one is willing to help me.
What?!???? I’m not talking about Police or CIA or whatever… I’m talking about starting a small modelling agency for my sisters and her friends and eventually expand.

  2. You can’t just become an agent. You don’t mention where you live but you first need to contact your state labor dept to find out the licensing and registration requirements for talent agents.

Then, how are you going to find out about castings? Most model casting calls are not open calls - clients call agencies directly. If you do not slready have relationships with the fashion directors of magazines, creative directors of catalogs, ad execs, fashion designers, etc how can you expect to find work for your models to begin with? Most new modeling agencies are started by agents from established agencies who have worked there for 10-20 years, then break away once they have a strong client base. Without this client base and long standing relationships, you are not going to be doing your models any favors. How are you supposed to find out when Gap is shooting their new ad campaigns if Gap’s creative director doesn’t call you? How do you know when J Crew is doing a model casting if they aren’t calling you directly. They certainly aren’t going to give out this information over the phone to anyone

I’m not trying to be discouraging but you need to be realistic. If you want any chance of becoming a model agent, you first need to start working for an established modeling agency to understand how the business works. Even getting in as an unpaid intern is better than nothing.

You’ll also need at least $100K to get started as an agent for business registration/licensing fees, insurance, tax advice, lawyers for the contracts, office space (you can’t get a talent agency license without a long-terms lease on office space), website production, dedicated phone lines, marketing materials, mailings, events, etc. Also as a new agency your first 3-6 months you’ll be offering your models for free just to get your name out there, so that’s no income for you.
